Abstract:
This study is an attempt to investigate the language needs of the Diploma students of computer programming at the Computer Centre, Aden University. It also suggests a language course framework for those students.
The instruments of investigation included questionnaires and language proficiency tests. The questionnaires are administered to 125 student informants and 10 teacher informants who are actually involved in the teaching programme of those students. The students and teachers informants were randomly chosen.
The language proficiency tests involving the four language skills (listening, speaking, reading, and writing) are also administered to the students in order to determine their standard of the English language proficiency.
The main aim of the investigation is to examine the students’ language needs as perceived by those student and teacher informants, and to obtain a needs profile as a step towards designing a language course for computer programming.
The results of the questionnaires and the tests have clearly revealed the importance of the English language to implement the requirements of this specialization and have confirmed the students’ low language proficiency. The results have also pointed out to the need of both general and specified language that would enable students to understand their content materials and also use the language for communicative situations.
In the end of this study, the researcher presents a needs profile of the students of this specialization to be the basis of a relevant English language course.
